One of the first questions expecting moms ask when planning their maternity session is: What should I wear for maternity photos?
The good news is there isn’t just one right answer. The most beautiful maternity photos happen when you wear pieces that feel comfortable, flattering, and like you.
As a maternity photographer based in Vancouver, Washington and serving families throughout the Portland area, I often help clients choose outfits that photograph beautifully while still feeling relaxed and natural.
This recent maternity session photographed in the breathtaking Columbia River Gorge is a wonderful example of how simple, thoughtfully chosen outfits can create so much variety and personality in your images.

For the first part of her maternity session, mom wore a soft, casual dress that had just enough movement to add life to the photos without feeling overly formal.
Dresses are always a wonderful option for maternity sessions because they naturally highlight your growing bump and allow for comfortable movement. They also photograph beautifully when walking, turning, or interacting with your partner.
What made this dress work so well was that it felt effortless and relaxed, which matched the outdoor setting perfectly.
With the sweeping views of the gorge behind them, the dress added a gentle sense of movement while still keeping the focus on the connection between this couple and the excitement of the season they’re in.

For the second part of the session, she changed into a completely different look: unbuttoned jeans paired with an open cardigan.
This style feels cozy, relaxed, and a little playful – perfect for showing off your bump in a natural way.
Layered textures like sweaters, knits, and cardigans photograph beautifully because they add depth and softness to the image. The texture of her sweater created subtle visual interest while still keeping the overall look simple.

One small detail that often makes a big impact in maternity photos is texture.
Soft knits, linen fabrics, sweaters, and natural materials photograph beautifully because they add dimension without distracting from the moment.

While there are plenty of maternity outfit guides online, the most important thing is choosing clothing that reflects your own style.
Some moms prefer dresses, while others love the relaxed look of jeans and cozy layers. Both can photograph beautifully.
The goal of your maternity session isn’t to look like someone else — it’s to capture this moment in a way that feels authentic to you.
