Spring sessions in the PNW always bring the magic and I am here for it! We get soft light, fresh blooms, the world is green again, and everyone has that “life is good” feeling that only spring can bring.
This particular maternity session had all of that… plus a two-year-old with her own ideas and agenda.
And honestly?
It was perfect.
Not because everything went according to plan—but because mom and dad showed up ready to love on their girl exactly as she was that day.
The result?
Some of the sweetest, most genuine images.
I photograph maternity and family sessions for growing families throughout Vancouver, Washington and the greater Portland, Oregon area, and one thing I can promise is this—no two sessions ever look the same, especially when a toddler is involved. But I’ll let you in on a little secret…we actually all need to listen to the toddlers because THEY KNOW WHAT THEY’RE DOING. When we meet them where they are, follow their lead, smile through any meltdowns, and get creative with redirection, we end up capturing the sweetest and most authentic moments.

If you’re planning a maternity session with a toddler, it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous about how it might go.
Toddlers are wonderfully unpredictable. They don’t always want to smile on cue. They might need extra snuggles, want to run around, or decide they’re done before we’ve even really started.
And that’s okay.
Because the truth is—toddlers don’t need to perform to create beautiful images.
In fact, the more we ask them to, the harder it usually becomes.

The moments that tend to matter most aren’t the perfectly posed ones.
They’re the in-between moments:
These are the moments that tell your story.
During this session, instead of focusing on getting her to look at the camera, we followed her lead. We played little games, talked about her favorite things, and let mom and dad interact with her in ways that felt natural and fun.
There was movement. There was laughter. There were pauses and resets.
And the results really speak for themselves!

If you’re bringing a toddler to your maternity session, here are a few simple ways to help everything flow a little more smoothly:
Let go of perfect smiles
The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your child will be. Genuine expressions will always matter more than forced ones.
Focus on your connection, not the camera
Snuggle them, talk to them, play with them. Trust that I’ll guide the rest.
Be open to a little movement and play
Some of the best moments happen when we lean into the energy instead of trying to contain it.
Trust your photographer
I always have plenty of tricks up my sleeve—games, prompts, little distractions—but the real magic happens when parents give me the space to connect naturally.

You don’t need a perfectly behaved toddler.
You don’t need everything to go exactly as planned.
You just need to show up ready to love on your people.
That’s what turns a session into something you’ll feel every time you look back on it.
If you’re expecting and have a little one at home, I’d love to help you create something just as meaningful—wild toddler energy and all. These days are worth remembering exactly as they are
