Bringing your brand new baby into the world is a huge moment—and capturing those fresh, fleeting newborn days through photography is something you’ll never regret. But I also know that the idea of preparing for a newborn session might feel like one more thing on your list. The good news? I’m here to make this experience feel easy, relaxed, and meaningful. I’ll make sure you know exactly how to prepare for your Vancouver, Wa newborn photography session.
Whether you’ve already booked your newborn session with me here in Vancouver, Washington or you’re just starting to explore your options, here’s exactly how to prepare so you feel confident, calm, and ready to enjoy this special time.
If you haven’t booked yet, the best time to reserve your newborn session is during your second trimester. I only take a limited number of newborn clients each month so I can stay flexible for early or late arrivals. Booking early also gives you plenty of time to prepare, so that by the time your baby arrives, you can focus your full attention on your new little bundle!
Already past the 2nd semester, or even maybe already delivered? It’s still worth reaching out – I may be available, and could help you fast track the process!
Once baby is here, we’ll set the session date—usually when your little one is somewhere between 7 and 14 days old, when they’re sleepiest and most snuggly. This timeline is not set in stone, however, because all babies and their families are unique! No matter the age of your baby, we’re sure to get beautiful photos (they just may not be as sleepy and curly).
You honestly don’t need much! My studio near Vancouver, Washington (Washougal, to be exact!) is stocked with everything from sweet little newborn knit outfits, to wraps and headbands, to cozy blankets.
Here’s what I recommend you bring:
A little preparation on the morning of your session can go a long way in helping everything run smoothly—but no pressure. Babies love to do their own thing, and we’re always ready to roll with whatever kind of day your little one is having.
If possible, try to time baby’s feedings so they arrive at the studio hungry and ready to eat. For in-home sessions, it’s ideal if baby is just finishing a full feeding right before I arrive. A full tummy helps them settle into that happy, sleepy state that’s perfect for posing.
But please know—this is just a suggestion, not a requirement. If baby’s schedule doesn’t line up exactly, that’s completely okay. I’ve worked with brand-new babies for years and I promise, we’ll take things at their pace.
Before the session, dress baby in a simple zip-up sleeper with no onesie underneath. This makes it super easy to undress them without waking them up, and helps keep the session flowing gently and calmly.
If we’re photographing your session in the comfort of your home, there are just a few simple things you can do to get ready:
• Choose a few favorite spaces for photos—ideally the rooms with the most natural window light (like the nursery, primary bedroom, or living room).
• Tidy up those areas by clearing nightstands, removing clutter, and simplifying the background. You don’t need to deep-clean—just a quick declutter helps keep the focus on your family.
• Raise your thermostat by a couple of degrees about 30 minutes before the session starts. A warmer room helps keep your baby cozy and sleepy throughout.
I’ll bring everything we need, and when I arrive, I’ll take a quick peek around to find the best lighting and guide you from there. In-home sessions are always relaxed, heartfelt, and beautifully personal.
I highly recommend that you, your partner, and your older children (if applicable) be in the photos—we’re not just documenting your baby, but the deep love and connection that surrounds them. Wardrobe plays a big part in the overall look and feel of your images – below are some suggestions that can really elevate the final images!
For studio sessions, my space is filled with soft whites and neutral textures, so I recommend choosing outfits that reflect that same calm and timeless palette. Think cozy knits, soft textures, and light, neutral colors that compliment baby and don’t distract from the connection we’re capturing.
Postpartum moms often feel beautiful and comfy in a flowy dress, and I have a small (but growing!) studio wardrobe available if you’d like to borrow one. If dresses aren’t your thing, a simple top or sweater paired with your favorite jeans works beautifully too. Just steer clear of bold patterns, bright colors, or dark tones like black, which can be too harsh against baby’s delicate skin.
For in-home sessions, the same general advice applies—just be sure your choices blend naturally into the cozy, personal feel of your home. And don’t stress about baby’s outfit—I’ve got plenty of wraps and cozy basics. A plain onesie is perfect to start with!
For dads and siblings, go for comfortable, simple, and clean. A neutral top with fitted jeans or chinos photographs really well. Avoid logos, bold prints, and dark or neon colors—less is more when it comes to keeping the focus on your family and this beautiful new chapter.
Of course, all of this (and more) is included in your prep guide once you book, and I’m always happy to help with wardrobe decisions along the way!
Newborn sessions typically last 2–3 hours to allow plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and gently posing baby without any rush. My newborn sessions, no matter where they take place, are calm, easy going, and totally baby-led. I’ve been doing this a long time, and I promise—we’ll move at your baby’s pace.
Seriously—don’t stress. Crying, cluster feeding, wide-awake babies… I’ve seen it all. Your baby is doing exactly what they’re supposed to do, and I’ll work with whatever mood they’re in that day.
Some of my favorite images have come from the moments in between poses—real, honest little glimpses of your baby just being themselves.
If you love the idea of documenting your baby as they grow, you might want to consider booking First Year Milestone Session as well. Many families choose a plan that includes newborn, 6-month, and 1-year sessions—it’s such a beautiful way to tell the full story of your baby’s first year.
I know those early days can feel like a blur. That’s why I do everything I can to make your newborn session simple, comfortable, and something you’ll truly enjoy. You’ll leave with images you’ll treasure forever—and probably a few sweet behind-the-scenes memories too.
